Thyroid Antibodies with Thyroid Hormones
| The most common cause of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s Disease. Since testing for Hashimoto’s Disease is not standard practice, it is rarely tested for. The Extended Hashimoto’s Panel contains a blood test that measures TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and tests for thyroid hormones, including free t4 and free t3 (“free” meaning unbound to protein).
Thyroid Antibody Test- TPO and TGA Also in this panel are tests for both Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies (TPO) and Thyroglobulin TGA antibodies. This test screens for the antibodies responsible for autoimmune Hashimoto’s Disease. Getting thyroid antibody tests run is extremely important since Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of hypothyroidism and is not typically tested for by our standard medical system. Reverse T3 Test Reverse T3 (rT3) is an inactive form of T3. A buildup of reverse T3 can promote hypothyroid symptoms even if other thyroid hormone levels are normal. |
